The Urbanists have been commissioned by Torfaen County Borough Council to re-visit a study originally undertaken in 2007, which looks at the creation of a canal-centred redevelopment in Cwmbran Town Centre, Torfaen. The study revitalises a site running along a stretch of the Monmouthshire Brecon Canal.
The development will provide a destination for local residents, visitors to the town centre and users of the canal corridor. The proximity of the site to the town centre enables the development to create a new cultural ‘quarter’offering an exciting opportunity for the creation of a vibrant and distinctive new town centre quarter focused on an active canal side.
This project coincides with the news earlier thismonth that 2000 miles of canals and rivers in England and Wales have been transferred from British Waterways, a public body, over to The Canal and River Trust – a charitable trust. The charity is due to receive £800m of funding over the next 15 years with the aim of transforming tired tow paths and canals into visitor destinations.
It is anticipated that the masterplan prepared for Torfaen will help set a strong framework for the development and improvement of the canal and its surroundings.
