Maelfa Centre, Cardiff

The Urbanists prepared a masterplan for the redevelopment of the Maelfa shopping centre, Cardiff in 2007 to address issues of the poor shopping environment, high levels of retail vacancy, the need for investment in community facilities, as well as concerns about the design, layout and condition of the centre.

Outline planning consent was granted in September 2007 and in 2011 we were re-commissioned to provide a detail review of the consented scheme with the view to submitting a new planning application which responded to the economic climate of that time.

One of the challenges we faced during this project was to ensure that the resulting masterplan not only responded to current market conditions but also retained the flexibility to adapt to any future market changes.

A comprehensive set of consultation events were undertaken at both public and stakeholder levels - these included detailed discussions with end users of the proposed community facility.

An outline planning application was approved in September 2011. Cardiff Council are now in the process of taking the site to the market.
