The principal challenge we needed to address with this commission was to create a welcoming and attractive urban environment in a space which carries 35,000 vehicle movements per day.
Our approach has been to work very closely with Hamilton Baillie Associates and the multi-disciplinary project team. We've studied other spaces of similar scale, reviewed the technical solutions that have been applied to other heavily trafficked urban spaces and have considered in detail the existing character of Oxford itself and the potential future role of the new space.
Our analysis has included in depth video analysis of movement throughout the space. The client has valued our urban design perspective which has helped the County Council to optimise the opportunities presented by the reconfiguration of the junction.
