The Urbanists were commissioned by Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council to produce a prioritised Regeneration Strategy for Aberdare Town Centre.
The study fully considered the social, economic and environmental problems and made positive recommendations about how the issues could be ameliorated. The strategy provided a deliverable Implementation Strategy for the package of projects and measures identified. These were identified during a number of public consultation sessions. Key projects that emerged include:
• Public realm improvements on a number of streets and potential key public spaces
• Redevelopment of key Town Centre sites
• Refurbishment and extension of poor quality buildings
• Public realm improvements which focus on minimising the impact of traffic in the Town Centre and improving the pedestrian environment
The Regeneration Strategy also identifies the need for successful Community Regeneration. The involvement of the community will help to shape Aberdare into a low carbon town with a strong local economy and loyal customer base, whilst improving the niche offer which will appeal to tourists and visitors.
